Music Classroom Decor Idea #1: Choose a Theme

Patterns

As any musician knows, the right setting can be essential to a great performance. Your classroom is no different! If you’re looking to create a cohesive and inviting atmosphere in your music classroom, consider using a pattern as your decorating theme. Dots, chevrons, and music notes are all great options that can be incorporated into your classroom decorations, furniture, and even on your walls.

By using a consistent pattern throughout your music classroom, you’ll help to create a visually appealing space that will encourage your students to let their creativity flow. Plus, it’s just plain fun to mix and match different patterns to create your own unique look.

Places

Another great way to liven up your music classroom is to choose a location theme. For example, you could choose Hogwarts from Harry Potter, the beach, outer space, or the mountains. This can help guide your decor choices and make your classroom feel more fun. Plus, it’ll be a great conversation starter with your students!

Music Classroom Decor Idea #2: Add Colors and Textures

In addition to classroom themes, you can also use simple colors and textures to personalize your music classroom. You can use a color scheme to tie everything together.

Choosing a Color Scheme

One of my favorite tools when choosing color schemes is coolors.co! Coolors is a simple palette generator that can help you choose complementary colors. This will help you narrow down future music classroom decor items.

A great way to plan a color palette is to first choose your favorite color. Then, find two colors that go well with it. You can use Coolors to find complementary colors. After you have your three colors, choose a light and dark shade of each one. This will give you a total of six colors to work with! Having a chosen color scheme will help tie everything together without you having to think too much about it.

Add Textures

You can also add texture to your music room with rugs, curtains, and pillows. This will add interest and comfort to your space– plus a little extra musical pizazz. Rugs are a great way to define different areas in your music classroom like your personal desk area, the podium, or a calm-down corner. A soft shag rug makes for a great spot for students to hang out during independent work time, during sectionals. or as a space to decompress.

If you’re lucky enough to have windows in your classroom, you can use curtains to help control the amount of light that comes into your room. Alternatively, stained glass window clings are a fun way to add pops of style while also keeping your classroom private and safe from outside eyes.

One of my teacher friends uses this stick-on window film and it is GORGEOUS!

Pillows are a great way to add color and comfort. Make sure if you choose to use pillows and other soft items, that they can be washed if need be. I always loved having a pillow on my office chair!

Music Classroom Decor Idea #3: Use Music-Themed Decorations

Shop Second Hand

I love thrifting for music-themed decor. It’s a great way to get fun things you need on a budget. You can find records, posters, and even music-themed clothing. The best part is that you never know what you’ll find!

I once found a brand new whiteboard that I turned into a music classroom job board! I’ve also found some awesome music fabric that I used as backing on my bulletin boards as well as several great frames that I used to display photos of festival performances. They added a lot of character to my music classroom. If you’re looking for a fun and affordable way to decorate your music classroom, I highly recommend thrifting!

Online

Another great place to find music-related decorations is online. There are many websites that sell music-themed items like rugs, posters, and even furniture. Amazon is a great place to start your search as well as Etsy! If you can dream it, reach out to some artisans and see if you can commission something unique. This will add your own special touch to your room and will be something you’ll truly cherish.

Music Classroom Decor Idea #4: Display Music Student Work, Compositions & Art Work

Student work should always be on display in your music classroom! This is a great way to show off what your students are learning and how proud you are of their accomplishments. You can frame student compositions, artwork, performance photos, or musical t-shirts to create a music-filled classroom that your students will love.

Here’s a fun way to display work… string some lights around the perimeter of your room and clip student work to the string with clothespins. This will create a fun, festive look.

String up fairy lights (which you can grab here) and hang up pictures, candids, or student work!

Another great way to display music student work is just to create a bulletin board. I always like to staple fun fabric to my bulletin boards and then cover the edges with a coordinating color. This is a great way to change up the look of your room and to show off student work in a different way (as well as adding big pops of color)!

My middle schoolers loved the coffee theme I had for a couple of years! You can grab the set here!

Music Classroom Decor Idea #5: Add Ambient Light

When designing your classroom, one of the most overlooked ways you can add personality and make your room more inviting is with ambient light. No one enjoys being in a classroom with harsh florescent lights all day, so add some lamps or string lights to your music classroom to create a more inviting and cozy space.

Add a desk lamp so that you still have light to work during lights-off activities.

Lamps are a great way to add both light and personality to your music classroom decor. You can find all sorts of music-themed lamps online or in stores. From simple desk lamps to floor lamps, there are many options to choose from. I always loved having a salt lamp in my office or classroom. Salt lamps are even said to have purifying and healing properties! No matter if you believe that or not, salt lamps add a very subtle, calming glow that helps create a serene environment.

String lights are another great way to add ambient light to your music classroom. You can string them around the perimeter of your room, above student work, or even around music-themed bulletin boards. This is a great way to add some extra light without spending a lot of money (and make those inevitable movie days WAY more fun).

    Final Thoughts

No matter what music classroom decor ideas you choose, the most important thing is that you make your space your own. In the end, you are the one spending all day every day in your classroom. Sure, your students enjoy the space too, but it’s important that you create a music classroom that you love. Your music classroom should be an extension of your personality and should ultimately feel like home!
